The Internet/Youtube

I've just put up my first blog post, i think i did it right its a bit tricky with these big fingerless feet of mine. and ive been browsing the internet and considering the way in which art on the internet can be easily interacted with. As an artist and film maker i really appreciate what youtube has done to the world of film. now anyone can make a film and post it online and reach a massively diverse audience. Be sure to check out the film 'Gwillam' (parts one and two) and leave a comment, get involved be critical its easier than ever before.

i am undecided as to whether this ease of communication with the artist helps or hinders the construction of an appropriate and thought provoking dialogue about a piece. so i challenge you to prove that the system works, get people talking.

  1. i think with regards to youtube and other similar sites there starts to be a problem because there is no filter as to who can post.im not saying there should be a speific art youtube but it can be hard to get them seen by the right people.

  2. There is a moment about 4 minutes in that is floristically defocused enough to saturate the mind with Jarryesque Pataphysics. Pataphysics Jarry said "is the science of imaginary solutions...extending as far beyond metaphysics as the latter extends beyond physics." This is where you need to be, along an evolutionary track that makes sense in tomorrow’s world. I’d be interested to read a selection of your philosophical film reviews.

  3. To combine and hopefully answer both responses to this post.
Due to the wide ranging audiences videos on youtube are available to i feel it is unlikely that the part of the film in question does enough to saturate minds with jarryesque pataphysics. However it is possible that a proportion of the audience may share your interest in that particular field (excuse the pun), a larger propeortion of the audience will probably still be struggling with why the images are shaking all over the place and why they are out of focus. Presumably with a targeted audience with a background in metaphysics and an understanding therefore of pataphysics it would be more likely to establish this link with a larger proportion of the audience.

I believe it was also Alfred Jarry who said:

"The virtue of dress rehearsals is that they are a free show for a select group of artists and friends of the author, and where for one unique evening the audience is almost expurgated of idiots."

Although this does not directly relate, it does bring up an interesting point regarding audiences and the difference between having a selected audience and a totally open audience. Jarry isn't saying that it is better or worse to have a selected audience as opposed to allowing anyone to view something, he is meerly stating that there is a difference. I for one welcome a wide ranging audience such as that available through youtube as it allows a much wider scope of feedback.
